Internally linking to other RELEVANT posts certainly helps. Why exactly? No idea, but I know several people who recommend it. In the same way that being linked to by people who write about the same subjects will help your site more than random links from unrelated blogs. Not sure how this blog will progress but I'm currently just going to write about anything that is interesting or meaningful to me at the time. as an example, where you had
