Thoughts And Recollections Of A Tree Spirit

First Day at Work and First Kookaburra Sighting

Friday, November 30th, 2007

What a shock to the system it was to have to get up at 5am for work! However, once I had got dressed, had some breakfast and we were on the road, it felt really good to be up so early. There was not a lot of traffic although surprisingly more than in the UK at 5.40 in the morning.

It took us half an hour to get to the yard and once there, as no one was gong to be in that could give me an induction, it was decided I would go and work with Mat for the day and also Dave.

The first job was pretty quick and easy. All we had to do was fell a small tree and chuck the wood on the truck. However, I didn’t have any gloves or long sleeves and had a few nasty shocks when my hand felt something slimy that turned out to be a big fat slug. By the time we had finished I was very dirty and felt a stinging on my arms. I didn’t think anything of it until Dave heard me mention it and said “Oh yeah, that’ll be the stinging caterpillars”. I must have squashed one or two against my arm as I had been lifting the branches and they had come up as white patches of raised skin like when you get stung by stinging nettles. Dave said they were harmless and gave me some Stingose cream to put on. Within an hour I couldn’t even feel it – Cool though – my first war wound lol! (more…)

Change of Plan

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

We were supposed to go to Collaroy on Monday and stay with Tom and Chris but as it was only a two bedroom flat Mat decided to phone the boss and see if there was another solution until we manage to sort our own place out.

He was kind enough to hire us a ute so instead of staying in Collaroy we could continue to stay with Paul in Parramatta and comute each day. We had to go and pick it up which took most of the day by the time we got home, what with having to catch the train into Sydney, then the ferry to Manley and then the bus to the hire centre but what a result – now we have transport and we get to keep our own room and continue to live in comfort (I was not relishing the thought of having to share with a couple of teenage lads lol).

Mat started work today but as everyone was very busy it was decided I wouldn’t start until tomorrow. It was very strange, after spending two solid weeks together, to kiss goodbye to Mat at 5.30am this morning and then have a whole day by myself. I spent the morning having a good tidy up and and then ventured into town all by myself for the first time. By now I know where I am going and pootled around the Westfield Mall picking up a few things here and there. It was quite fun but I certainly couldn’t spend days on my own long term. I think the lack of social interaction would drive me mad.

Well, now it’s about time I went to bed as it will be an early start for us both tomorrow. I’m not sure what I will be doing but Mat seems to think I wil spend my first day doing stuff around the office getting things sorted out. I guess I will just have to wait and see.

Starting Work on Tuesday

Sunday, November 25th, 2007

Good news of sorts – Mat got an email yesterday to say his visa has been approved. This means that today was the last day of our holiday and on Tuesday Mat, and hopefully me as well, will start work at Plateau Tree Services. Tomorrow we will pack up the majority of our stuff and head over to Collaroy where we will be staying with a couple of young lads that work for the same company.

Although our holiday has come to an end it does mean that we will be both earning money, therefore not continuing to slowly eat into our savings, and also hopefully be able to get our own place that we can turn into a cosy little love nest just for two.

It’s going to be hard to start with, both getting used to working outside in a hot climate and having to share a two bedroom apartment between four. However, the end result is in site – Mat and myself finally living together properly, together – and I just can’t wait.

My Birthday

Sunday, November 25th, 2007

The Thursday just passed was my birthday. Our intention was to go to the Blue Mountains for the day and then come back and go find ourselves a cosy little eatery in Parramatta for the evening. However, as we had had a lot of thunder and lightning the night before and rain was predicted all day we decided not to risk it. This was probably a good idea anyway due to the fact that after waking up at 6am and Mat giving me my birthday presents, we both ended up falling back asleep until 10.30am so would have had a very late start.

The whole place was laid out really well and there were signs up everywhere encouraging you to walk on the grass and amongst the plants, a real change to the usual UK signs that so often read ‘Keep Off the Grass’.

Unfortunately we arrived too late to go into the tropical house which closed at 4pm. We got there at 3.50 and as it bore a nominal entry fee of around $4 it wouldn’t have been worth our while for 10 minutes. It was laid out inside interconnecting arc and pyramid glasshouses and looked really cool. There was an exhibition on at the time labelled “Sex & Death” which went on to explain the show of orchids and carnivorous plants that were on display. We will definitely be going back another day for a look round and longer walk round the park.

Amongst all the plants and trees we also saw flocks of colourful rainbow lorikeets which was amazing and also flocks of sulphur-crested cockatoos. These guys were surprisingly tame and let you get really close before raising their impressive crests in a warning. Not like the ibis that also inhabited the park; they seemed to have an aversion to cameras and knew instantly if you were trying to snap them. I couldn’t even get close enough to get a decent picture on zoom. I think for me, the fact that there are all these colourful and strange birds flying free and they’re not an uncommon sight, is the thing that brings it home to me the most that I am not in the UK anymore.

Once we had walked round the majority of the gardens and my camera had run out of juice we decided it was about time we got some food so wandered back to Circular Key to hunt down a nice little eatery. After wandering round the harbour to the Rocks precinct we came across some converted warehouses, all turned into restaurants of various types, and all with outside seating areas overlooking Sydney Harbour, the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House.

We chose Wolfie’s Grill which offered a variety of steaks and fish. As it was my birthday we decided to push the boat out and after an appetizer of garlic bread to share, we then also shared a delicious chateaubriand (500g fillet steak) with béarnaise sauce and various vegetables all cooked to perfection. To finish, Mat had a crème brûlée and I had a sumptuous chocolate truffle mousse with summer fruits compote. It was definitely a delicious meal and by English standards a very good price indeed.*

After our meal we took a stroll down to the water’s edge and had a romantic few moments taking in the fantastic scenery lit up by the lights of Sydney before walking back to the train station to go home.

I feel truly lucky to have arrived in Australia in time for my birthday and to be able to be with Mat and I have to say I couldn’t have wished for a better way to spend it.

* I feel it is important to point out that the reason I keep mentioning the prices of things is because I hope this blog can be informative as well as of general interest to people who have not already been to Australia. Not, I hasten to add, because I am obsessed with money or because I am inadvertently trying to point out that Mat is a cheapskate 

Australia – I’m Here!

Monday, November 19th, 2007

Ok, so this post is a little late as I have been here exactly a week now. I should have posted a short piece when I first arrived to let everyone know I arrived safe and sound but what can I say? Mat and I had a lot of catching up to do, lol :-)

To give a brief run down:

Day 1
Arrived finally and tried not to be the last person off the plane. I thought I had accomplished this successfully but somehow managed to be one of the last through customs (Kazakhstan trip all over again). (more…)

Arrived at Brunei Safe and Sound

Sunday, November 11th, 2007

Well here I am, at a funky little internet cafe in Brunei airport with a 10 hour wait until my transfer to Sydney.

I waved a sad goodbye to my dad and brother at 6.30am Friday morning. I’m so glad my Bro made the effort to come and see me off, early mornings aren’t exactly his strong point, nevermind 4am. I know I will still be able to have long chats with my dad whilst I’m away, especially if he makes use of the webcam I gave him and gets Messengering and Skyping! My brother, however, has never been one for long deep and meaningfuls or simple chatting on the phone at all now I come to think about it, so I think it will be a lot harder to keep in good contact with him. When we normally spend time together we tend to do stuff or just chill out in each others company. Hopefully we will find a way around it, though it’s not going to stop me missing him very much. Ready And Waiting To Start My Longhaul Flight To Oz Land

Saturday, November 10th, 2007

Wow, what a stressful and hectic day it has been.

I am finally packed and ready to go, virtually. Am having a last ditch attempt at ripping as many CDs to my porrtable hard drive as possible so I have some music to take with me. I have left everything till the last minute as usual but there really isn’t any surprises there!

I spent all day packing up my stuff to store in my aunty and uncle’s loft and trying to decide which books and DVDs to take with me. Afterall the effort I weighted my luggage and found myself to be 5kgs over the limit so had to ditch the DVDs and some of my books. I found this very hard and am going to miss my books like crazy. I am thinking that maybe once I start earning in Australia I can treat myself to a little parcel once a month if I ask my aunty to kindly pack up a few books and send them out to me.

As for my cats, well, neither of them are to be seen at the moment so I hope they emerge for a farewell cuddle before I go. At least they are able to stay where they are at my aunty’s and hopefully not get too stressed at my departure. Now I know how Mat must have felt when he had to leave his Jack Russell, Eddie, behind at his brother’s. (more…)
