Happy New Year to Everyone!

Monday, December 31st, 2007

I am going to take this opportunity to say Happy New Year to everyone that I know now. Mat and I are in Parramatta at the moment, getting ready to take a ferry or train into Sydney ready for the Big Night’s celebrations. We were advised not to drive in as it gets so busy and it also means we can both have a drink whilst watching the festivities.

We are both feeling a little daunted as we don’t really know what to expect, apart from the fact that everyone has said it’s going to be really jam-packed with people. Our original plan of going to find a nice cosy place to sit in the Royal Botanical Gardens that overlooks Harbour Bridge and the fireworks has been scuppered as apparently they are charging $250 a ticket to get in. We will just have to wait and see what we can find. We both agreed as it would be our first New Year in Australia we really couldn’t pass up the chance to go and watch one of the largest firework displays ever, just for the experience.

So anyway, that’s what we’re dong. Internet is still patchy at the moment and we have been so busy over the christmas hols that I haven’t had a chance to make any posts or send any emails. However, hopefully things will calm down a bit soon and we will get an internet connection sorted so I can be a bit more regular. For now, we both wish everyone a Happy New Year and hope you all have a lovely night.

Blog Fairy Has Visited

Monday, December 10th, 2007

Alex doesn’t have internet access for a while, so I just thought I would take this opportunity to introduce myself… I’m the little guy that lives in her server, and occasionally bodges code or script until things work as they are supposed to.

Her friend (Chris) pointed out to me that the Next/Previous page links, when viewnig the main blog index pages, and the Next/Previous post links when viewing individual posts were both missing :(

Although not perhaps as the theme’s author originally intended, both types of links are now present. All I need to think about some time is rediscovering the FTP details so I can magically upgrade her blog to Wordpress 2.3.1 and also install a patch for a plugin of hers.

Anyway enough of me, just remember close your eyes, clap your hands, and say you believe in fairies, else I will will cop it, and then who will fix the blog?

A Love Nest Just For Two

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

After an extremely stressful Saturday, looking at apartments and filling in reams and reams of forms, yesterday we got confirmation that our application for the first flat we viewed, which also happened to be our favourite, had been accepted.

Grats to us :-)

After being told by many people that getting a place to live in Australia is hard enough normally but that Christmas is the worst time of year we are both extremely pleased. Apparently it normally takes at least two or three weeks of traipsing round viewings before an application is successful. (more…)

Second Day at Work & Second Brush With Aussie Nature

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

Today (Thur 29th Nov) I was supposed to be going into the office with Mat and then while he went off on his jobs I was going to wait until 9am ish when Stuart was going to be there and have my induction. However, when we got there Tony (big boss) decided I should go and help Mat and the others first, and then get a lift back to the office for my induction after lunch.

The first job was really quick, just removing and chipping a load of wood from a house where the tree was reduced the previous day. It was at a really cool place where there were steps winding round and down to a jetty and a little private beach by the sea.

The second job was also pretty quick, at a really impressive house and grounds which apparently belong to the navy. The house (I should probably say mansion) and grounds next door belonged to the Prime Minister, although I’m not sure if he was there at the time as Australia only had their general election last week – my claim to fame for the week lol.
