Last Friday Hayley returned to the office after visiting the lady’s dunny across the yard saying there was a lizard on the toilet wall, so of course I grabbed my camera and ran off to see for myself. This is what I found:
This is probably the second most common lizard I have seen here so far. I have seen them up to about 10cm in length not including their tail. They are very smooth and skink like in appearance but as much as I have tried googling various descriptions I cannot find out what exactly they are.
If anyone has any ideas or there are any experienced herpetologists out there that can help I would love to hear from you

this could be a “Ground Skink” or “Mole Skink” lizard. do a google search and check more pictures for a match.
Thanks Chris, I googled Ground Skink and Mole Skink and started to get excited when they looked very similar. However, I then realised these are only native to America and I am in the Sydney area of Australia so unfortunately it can’t be one of these.
This exercise did spur me on to investigate further though. After googling “common skinks in sydney” and picking out the larger ones (around 25cm) I have come up with two likely species: the Eastern Striped/Robust Skink (Ctenotus robustus) or the Eastern Water Skink (Eulamprus quoyii).
After examining and cross examining images from various sites with varying reliability I am hedging my bets on the Eastern Water Skink. I know that there are bodies of water near the site in Ingleside and when googling images of “Eulamprus quoyii” the results are more consistently similar to the colouring of my skink.
i live just east of melbourne and have came across these skinks in the yarra ranges (which is about 1 hour east of melbourne) i didnt know what they were and i was searched everywhere and came to the conclusion that there definately a type of water skink, either eastern or the ones with no common name, but all the information i found says that they are eastern water skinks, so yeh.
Thanks for that Tom. You’ve definitely convinced me now; an Eastern Water Skink it is
I’ll have to get on and try and identify some of the other little skinks now but need to take pictures first.
