Whereabouts are you? As far as I know most lizards aren't poisonous as such. I just googled it and the search came back with only two lizards known to inject poison, the Gila monster and the Mexican beaded lizard. Wiki also says that venom glands have also been found in some monitors (goannas) and iguanas.

I'm no expert so wouldn't want to say for sure but if it's not an iguana or monitor then you're probably safe. Just don't get bitten as, poisonous or not, some lizards can give a nasty nip. Personally I love reptiles and relish sharing my living space with them :-)

Thanks for that Tom. You've definitely convinced me now; an Eastern Water Skink it is :-) I'll have to get on and try and identify some of the other little skinks now but need to take pictures first.

i live just east of melbourne and have came across these skinks in the yarra ranges (which is about 1 hour east of melbourne) i didnt know what they were and i was searched everywhere and came to the conclusion that there definately a type of water skink, either eastern or the ones with no common name, but all the information i found says that they are eastern water skinks, so yeh.

Thanks Chris, I googled Ground Skink and Mole Skink and started to get excited when they looked very similar. However, I then realised these are only native to America and I am in the Sydney area of Australia so unfortunately it can't be one of these.

This exercise did spur me on to investigate further though. After googling "common skinks in sydney" and picking out the larger ones (around 25cm) I have come up with two likely species: the Eastern Striped/Robust Skink (Ctenotus robustus) or the Eastern Water Skink (Eulamprus quoyii).
After examining and cross examining images from various sites with varying reliability I am hedging my bets on the Eastern Water Skink. I know that there are bodies of water near the site in Ingleside and when googling images of "Eulamprus quoyii" the results are more consistently similar to the colouring of my skink.
