Thoughts And Recollections Of A Tree Spirit

Christmas Party Debauchery

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

After my birthday bash the previous night we had less than twelve hours to sleep and recover before starting all over again. Plateau Tree Service had their christmas party on the Sunday at 12.30pm and where else but back at the Surf Rock again!

We were going to walk but the weather was absolutely foul so we drove round to Sol and Jodie’s who live about the same distance as us but in the opposite direction. We had been invited round there for pre-party drinks and hoped that the rain would ease before leaving. As it happens it didn’t but Jodie wasn’t drinking so she drove the girls (Sparky and Bryony had also joined us) and the lads made do with umbrellas.

It was really lovely to see everyone from Plateau again, quite a few I hadn’t seen since I was made redundant back in July. There was free beer (VB), wine and champers and assorted trays of food so obviously the majority of people took full advantage. It wasn’t long before most of us were in varying states of inebriation. I do wonder on the reasons behind having the party on a Sunday arvo as opposed to a Saturday night as everyone had work in the morning (except for me hee hee ha ha) and it didn’t seem as though anyone was letting that thought hold them back at all.

It wasn’t too long before things declined slightly and people started getting thrown out for various mishaps including (more…)

New Job Starts Today

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

This weekend has been emotional and hectic for several reasons, not just because I turned thirty!

Friday was my last day at Graham’s Gardening Services and although there will be a few important things I won’t miss, I will definitely miss everyone I worked with. Over the last three and a half months I have seen a lot of people come and go but whether they stayed for a few days or a month or two I enjoyed the company of all of them. Even though I was the only girl of about seven lads we all seemed to have a bond and got on really well and I want to acknowledge that.

Another thing I will miss will be working outside amongst nature. Spending a lot of time weeding may be boring on one level but fascinating on another as I found I developed a very intimate relationship with the insect world. I’ve rescued hundreds of spiders and their egg sacs which on being disturbed they manage to pick up and drag off somewhere else, I’ve seen a mother spider carrying all her babies on her back (I knew scorpions did this but wasn’t aware that spiders did) and I’ve met lots of cute and bizarre insects that I hadn’t seen before.

I’m glad that I decided to give the gardening a go, even if it didn’t work out. I now know that gardening is not for me and not only that, I have discovered something else about myself; to enjoy my job I require plenty of mental stimulation and ongoing learning. This is why I have got myself another job back in the office. It has taken a while but I have finally got a job as an accounts clerk so am looking forward to finding out all the differences between English and Australian rules.

The actual job is nice and local at a place called Sunnyfield in Allambie Heights. They provide work, accommodation and activities etc. for mentally disabled people. They have person centred work ethics and all seem a lovely bunch of people so I’m looking forward to going in for my first day in an hour or so :-) I better get cracking!

My Birthday

Monday, November 24th, 2008

After a fairly leisurely get up in the morning and some opening of cards and little presents from Mat (chocolates and a bottle brush(!?)) we decided to go to a couple of house viewings before breakfast as they were just round the corner from where we currently live (we are planning on moving in to a bigger place together with Nick and Kat so that we can combine our money and get more for it).

After that Mat took me to my favourite cafe in Narrabeen, the Lifesavers Cafe where they do a delicious scrambled egg, smoked salmon and avocado on toast and delicious freshly squeezed apple juice – yummy!

Once we had satisfied our stomachs we decided it would be nice to go for a walk on the beach so with plenty to choose from we opted for a little drive and went up to the top of the peninsular to Palm Beach. We parked up by the golf course and took a walk up Station beach on the West. Despite the extreme wind it wasn’t too cold and when we dipped our toes in we were pleasantly surprised at how warm it was, before remembering it wasn’t open sea but the Pittwater inlet channel.

When we got up to the end we crossed over to the East side and walked down Palm Beach, finding the water a lot colder this time. We passed the Summer Bay Surf Club (of Home & Away fame) but unfortunately I didn’t have my camera on me as it is broken so still have not got around to taking a picture of me stood in front of it. Hopefully this will be rectified soon as Mat’s birthday present to me is going to be a camera, we just need to sort out where we are going to get it from at a reasonable price.

Later on in the evening we went out for some drinks at The Surf Rock in Collaroy with friends that Mat had asked from Plateau. We were originally going to have a beach barbequeue but the weather has been very changeable lately and rain had been threatened all day.

It turned out to be a really good night after all my worrying that no one would come. There was Henry and Ruth (fellow pommies on a sponsership like us), Sol and Jodie, and Sparky and Bryony (Sol and Sparky started at Plateau just before I left). They are all lovely people, I’m so pleased they chose to join me in my celebrations and glad we got one of the barmaids to take a picture of us all:

From the left, Sparky, Ruth, Henry, Me, Sol, Jodie, Bryony and Mat (click to enlarge).

We all had quite a bit to drink and I had some great girly cats while the lads went off to watch the rugby at the bar (New Zealand v. Australia). I think it was the World Cup Final for rugby union (?), anyway, New Zealand won for the first time so Sol (being Māori) was in very good spirits and it all added to more drinks being bought etc etc. A funny fact: this is the first time I have been drunk on my birthday, it only took me thirty years! :-) I think I am starting to make up for things I didn’t do in my teenage years and twenties.

All in all I had a fantastic day and finished off by walking home with Mat, detouring along the beach, at around 1.30 in the morning.

Happy Birthday to Me!

Happy Birthday Richie

Today has finally arrived, the day I turn the big THREE OH!

I have been dreading it ever since I turned 27 as I could feel it lurking there, in the dark corner behind me, ever getting closer.

Strangely enough, now it is here all I feel is peace and acceptance and an instinctive knowledge that things can only get better.

I might elaborate on this post later but Mat is taking me out for a birthday breakfast at my favourite cafe in a minute so better go for now.

Thank you to everyone who has sent me birthday wishes on the net of all things inter, facebook, email, blogs, etc. I am truely chuffed that you took the time to think of me and send me messages :-)

Our Friendly Rainbow Lorikeets

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Out of all the amazing wildlife we have come across in Australia the Lorikeets are one of the most interactive and friendly, not to mention beautiful, and have to be amongst our favourites. For some reason I have never written a post on them and as we have been here over a year now I think it is well over due.

Even though they are daily visitors to our balcony they are not the easiest creatures to photograph but this is one of the better ones which I have practised my new photoshop skills on to hopefully improve a bit:

Classics By The Campfire

Friday, November 14th, 2008

Last weekend Mat and I went on our second camping trip with the Suzuki Club (we went to the Zukana over the October long weekend for which I still need to write up a post). It was just for one night from Saturday through to Sunday and was entitled “Classics by the Campfire”, a chance for members to get away for a short break and do a spot of four wheel driving in a relaxed atmosphere. The location was Abercrombie River National Park not far from Oberon.

We set off at 6.30am to meet up with the rest of the group in Oberon at 10.00am and then drive in convoy to the park. We have got quite a lot of camping gear now but Mat managed to get everything packed in with room for the rear view and last minute things behind the seats. Our little Sierra might be small but she managed to get us there in good time with all the additional weight and we even fitted in a visit to the local pie shop for some breakfast before joining the group.

The weather in Oberon was pretty dismal with a chill in the wind and drizzle to add to the discomfort. We had been warned that Oberon was a particularly cold place, worse even than the Blue Mountains which we passed through to get there, and we just hoped that the rain would abate in time for setting up camp. Before we left in convoy to my delight Tim kindly provided us with the use of a club CB handheld radio so that we could tune in and keep in contact with everyone on the journey (all other people having one of the same or a proper in-car installation). I didn’t realise quite how useful this would be until (more…)

A Year and a Day in Oz

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

I am shattered right now and really must go to bed but I was just about to shut down the pc for the night when I suddenly realised that yesterday was my one year anniversary of landing in Australia.
That means it is a year and a day today and therefore I think a specially important date and milestone.

I am slightly annoyed with myself for not having done something important to commemorate the occasion, but alas, it is too late now and actually, as part of my recent personal development program I am going to give my inner critic a sharp slap and be content with the fact that I have noticed now and am taking the time to mention it on my blog :-)

So there we go. How time has flown. I have been through many emotional roller coasters over the past year connected with my change of locale, lifesyle and loss of the physical closeness of those that I love. However, I am also having the experience of a lifetime with the love of my life, my beautiful Mat, and am slowly but surely making new friends along the way.

Right now I am sat alone at the pc (Mat went to bed hours ago) with a smile on my face feeling positive and content (that reminds me of a card a friend once scanned for me and I think I still have it, see below). Life is good :-)
