While Mat and I were in the UK last month the top topic on the news was Swine Flu, with outbreaks popping up all over the place. Though no one in the UK had died from it people were in varying states of panic, mostly due to, in my opinion, over reactive media and their love for blowing things out of proportion for the sake of a good story.
However, on our reintry to Australia, apart from having to hand in a medical declaration at passport control and have an infra red scan of our body temperatures as we left the plane exit, everything was relatively quiet.
I did receive a little bit of ribbing from our flat mates and work colleagues as my allergy to tree pollen was in full swing so I was fairly snotty and sneezy.
Since we’ve been back though, media attention has been growing with the first confirmed case announced last week. Yesterday morning, as I was listening to Merrick, Rosso and Kate Richie on Nova 96.9, they declared that within the next year every Australian will know of someone that has contracted or will themselves contract Swine Flu; apparently 1 in 5 will get it!
Today the news advised that there are 33 confirmed cases of Swine Flu in New South Wales and 147 in Australia.
Considering the size of Australia this doesn’t seem a lot to me and as yet, again, no one has died from it. In fact as far as I know the only deaths have occurred in Mexico where the thing originated and in America.
Chris and Irina – I would be very interested to know the state of Swine Flu in Kazakhstan – is it in the news yet and are there any confirmed cases near you?

No confirmed cases, and I’m sure the Kazakh government wouldn’t cover anything up… :-/
As for the news, I don’t watch the Russian and Kazakh language news reports (and the English satellite based one is just as bad for the following)- it winds me up too much with all the blatant propaganda and half-truths. Irina just doesn’t really watch the news, despite occasional verbal pokes with a stick

I think I prefer the proper name AH1N1 virus to swine flu. This article certainly seems more interested in the facts than winding people up into a state of panic. Yesterday’s news here was that Australia has over 500 confirmed cases now and after Wednesday night’s big match ‘State of Origin’ in Melbourne, any children that attended are to be quarantined for a week before going back to school – cos Melbourne has the worst cases apparently.
Interested in the facts, whilst screaming out ‘Kazakhstan is great, everything is fine, nothing to see here, move along people’. :-/
Swine flu along with bird flu is a genetically altered virus, meaning it’s a scientifically created virus, manufactured in a laborotory by white coats! It is a form of propaganda, un-disclosed population control and a distraction from terrorism and the economic crisis! And i ask you who has shares in it? Donald Rumsfelt! Do you have lots of travelling experience? Do you speak/understand kazakh or russian? Do you miss England?
What did you learn from the whole experience of living in Kazakhstan? Have you been travelling across Kazakhstan?

An Austrian investigative journalist named Jane Burgermeister has recently started a lawsuit against the W.H.O. for complicity in the worst biological crime of this century (so far). This involves “designer viruses” which were intentionally released as a vaccine by the Austrian contingent of Baxter Labs. In February a Czech scientist tested this re-assorted vaccine and found it contained the live H5N1 and live H3N2 viruses.
