Thoughts And Recollections Of A Tree Spirit

Sunday Afternoon Burner

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

After testing the fire out on Saturday night Mat decided he would get a proper one going on Sunday afternoon. After querying the necessity for such a monstrous gnarly looking log that I caught him lugging in he declared it was a “Sunday afternoon burner”. So named by his dad as such logs will keep going for hours and are ideal for a Sunday afternoon.

“Ok, fair enough” I thought. I must admit that even though it’s not exactly cold we are having a chillier snap at the moment and we don’t have to pay for the wood. Mat prompted me to take photos of his baby so I thought I should do them justice and post them here for all to admire :-)

I think our new hearth deserves a name but will have to confer with Mat on this one as I’m sure he’ll want the final say. As long as it’s not Dave. I don’t have anything against Dave but we have had a lizard and a spider or two and countless other inanimate objects named Dave already so I’m encouraging diversity.

These photos were either taken before the sunday afternoon burner was put on or a few hours afterwards when it had broken up a bit by the look of it – can’t remember which.

New House Pictures

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

We had a wirlwind move yesterday afternoon/evening with the much appreciated help from friends from the tree world: Daveo, Johnny, Phil, Sol and Erin. Together with Mat they got our entire house (less a few minor items that would fit into one car load) packed up into Daveo’s truck, Mat’s ute and trailer, Johnny’s Ute and Phil’s car and got it all to the new house in one trip! An amazing feat and a huge thank you to the boys :-)

It goes withut saying that the beers were on us and once unloaded the night turned into a bit of a drinking session with homemade burgers made by Mat on the new built-into-the-wall barbie. I should have taken some pictures but I had spent all day packing and was absolutely knackered. Anyone that knows me well enough will know I don’t do moving very well and this was my most organised packing session ever – even Mat was impressed!

Anyway, we spent today unpacking and trying to get the essentials into some sort of order. I decided I would take some pictures to demonstrate the layout of the new place. You will have to excuse the boxes and stuff everywhere. I thought if I waited until things looked neat and tidy I simply wouldn’t get around to it.

Christmas is Around the Corner but Where is Yule?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

I had a very bizarre experience in the supermarket the other week when I was casually walking down an isle and came face to face with a display of hand painted Christmas ornaments and other Christmas paraphernalia. My brain had a spasm as I thought to myself “but we haven’t had Easter yet have we?”. After a couple more attempts at putting my brain in order, which was silently screaming that something wasn’t quite right here, I gave up and continued with my shoppping, forgetting all about it.

It wasn’t until my second visit to the supermarket and I saw the same thing and had the same initial shock, that my brain finally put it all together. I realised that, yes, it’s October, and yes, Christmas is around the corner. In explanation: this will be my third Christmas living in the southern hemisphere in Australia but evidentally I still can’t get my head round it being in the Summer! My brain will not compute!

I don’t know if the fact I am a Pagan doesn’t help, being much more in tune with the seasons and relating them to the corresponding festivals. Afterall, in the northern hemisphere everyone will relate Christmas to Yuletide. The two just go hand in hand. But here in the southern hemishere we would celebrate Yule in July; a different time of year but still in Winter.

To me, celebrating Christmas in Summer is plain weird. The traditional Australian Christmas dinner isn’t roasted turkey with all the trimmings but fish; instead of spending the time huddled up all cosy inside one spends it out at the beach or in the garden topping up the tan; people put up Christmas decorations and lights but to appreciate the full effects one has to wait until after 9 o’clock in the evening for it to go dark.

If that’s not confusing enough there is similar confusion with Halloween. Non-Pagan folk are getting ready to celebrate this next weekend on the 31st October. However, as Halloween originates from one of the old Pagan festivals in the northern hemisphere, also known as Samhain, and these festivals were all tied in with the seasons, not specific dates, in the southern hemisphere Halloween should really be celebrated in Autumn around the 31st 30th [thank you Chris] April.

Whatever Happened to Jennifer?

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

All has gone quiet after the last message from Dom on the 1 Oct. However, my friend John kindly pointed out this classified ad which shows the following pictures demonstrating the first set of messages:

I hope no one minds me reproducing them here but I imagine eventually the original ad will be removed and it’s always nice to have pictures to illustrate a story. I have been a little lax with pictures lately.

John has obviously been doing a little bit of research and also pointed out that Sydney considered this story newsworthy as it appeared at www.news.com.au here. It doesn’t look as if we are any further to the truth but reading the comments, many people think it was an advertising scam. Nobody mentions the third day’s message and it doesn’t look as if we are any further to the truth.

So I guess here endeth the story of Jennifer…

Paper Round for a Week

Friday, October 16th, 2009

This morning was the last day of my holiday relief paper round. I started it last Saturday and then did Tuesday to Friday, delivering the Manly Daily on a run that started on the corner of where our new house is going to be.

I had been musing on the idea of a paper round for a while as I thought it would be a good way to get fit and earn a little money as a bonus (all be it not much). The Manly Daily is always advertising holiday relief runs for a week here and a week there and with the two week school break just ended there were a lot of runs in Avalon (they call them runs here, not rounds). I decided to give it a go so rang up and got one for a week. The papers are free and get delivered to everyone unless they request not to receive it and they have to be delivered by 8.30 in teh morning.

I must say, I very nearly gave up after Saturday morning. The pile of papers I had to pick up was humungous, I could barely carry one batch at a time and there were about ten batches. I ended up doing a small section at a time and driving in between. Not only that but I was about fifteen papers short and it started pissing down with rain about half an hour before I finished. The whole thing took me just over two hours for a poxy $12, not that the money was ever really the point of the exercise.

Anyway, after much deliberation I decided to stick it out and come Tuesday morning, after carefully plotting my route from Google Maps the night before and getting up nice and early at 5.15am I was ready to go. On arriving at my collection point I was delighted to find less than a fifth of the pile I encountered on Saturday and managed to carry the whole lot all at once, just. Tuesday’s paper was half the size and had no thick property insert so needless to say it was much more manageable and enjoyable. I actually got to relax and take interest in my surroundings.

Being out during the dawn chorus is fabulous. Everything is amplified: the jubilant laughing of the Kookaburras, the rawcous cacophony of squabbling Cockatoos, the shrill whistle of the Butcher Birds, the fluting yodel of the Magpies, the liquid voice of the Currawongs and of course the high pitched tweets and twitters of the Lorrikeets. In fact, there were a couple of times I’m sure I found myself listening to a baby Currawong but try as I might I couldn’t see the owner of the raspy little croaks. I only recognised the sound because we had a pair of Currawongs nesting in a nearby palm tree when we used to live in Collaroy and the baby used to make exactly the same noise – very loudly – and very early in the morning :-)

Anyway, today was slightly different as I had booked a phone call to the UK before work. So as not to miss it I got up extra early, 4.15am, to get back in time for 6ish. I took my head torch, for which I was very glad of as without it I would certainly have missed some of the letter boxes. This extra early hour gave the run a different slant. There were no birds to start off with but instead many rustlings and scuttlings in the bushes. I had a shock when I passed under one tree; extra noisy rustlings preceeded the sudden launch of a big black shape into the sky with the beats of giant leathery wings. I had disturbed a fruit bat from his up-side down slumber. This happened a few more times before dawn and I delighted in the spectacle.

In summary of my week as a paper girl: The hardest part was leaving the house immediately after waking up (I normally get up around the same time but have a leisurely cup of tea, breakfast and alone time with the computer before work). However, once I had started the run I loved being out with urban nature on my own. Dawn is like a different world and it filled me with energy and a zest for life, not to mention the aching in my muscles afterwards which means I was getting valuable exercise! On the down side it’s very tying. The early hours before I go to work is the time I spend writing this blog, facebooking and calling friends in the UK etc. Also, I don’t know that I would like to get up so early every Saturday. Ideally if I was to do it on a more regular basis it would be good to share with another person and either take it in turns on a daily or a weekly basis.

Good News on the House Front

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Mat and I spent our our fourth Saturday last weekend looking at houses again as our current landlord wants to sell.

After seeing the house that we thought would be ‘the one’ we then went on and saw an even better one. We put applications in for both but received the happy news yesterday that our application for the second property had been successful and we have arranged to sign the lease documents this weekend. It’s at the very top end of our budget but we were willing to pay a little extra to be able to stay in Avalon. Since moving here last year and having doubts about it being so far away I have absolutely fallen in love with the place.

The new house is a single level semi, has two bedrooms, a nice kitchen with utility room, nice bathroom and a good sized lounge. Although we lose our beautiful Pittwater views we have gained a wonderful open fireplace which means we will save money on fuel as firewood is free (Mat being a tree surgeon an’ all). I’ve never had a real fire before so this is a hugely exciting thing for me :-) In addition to all this we will have a nice little private garden with a drive and a carport, or workshop for Mat as he puts it. It will be within walking (or stumbling) distance of Nick and Kat’s new house (they moved at the weekend) and Daveo’s place which was another important requirement. It should also be within walking distance of Paradise Beach which will be nice. Not that our present address isn’t within walking distance of all these places, it’s just that we live at the very top of one the steepest hills in Avalon; going out on foot is no issue, it’s the coming back which strikes fear into the fittest heart!

This new property is being leased privately and there was just a little ad in the paper so I can’t post any pictures from a website this time. You will have to wait until we move in, which all going well, should be in two Saturdays time, the 24th.

Jennifer Messages Continue

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

So after yesterday’s additional message of “Make that 4 days!” we had another one this morning:

“Jennifer… Don’t worry, I will be your rebound… Call Dom (Tit) on xxx [mobile number]“.

I don’t know what on earth “tit” means but the whole thing is quite amusing now. I expect I’m not the only one wondering whether there is going to be any more tomorrow and whether or not Jennifer decides to ring Dom.
