Thoughts And Recollections Of A Tree Spirit

Christmas is Around the Corner but Where is Yule?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

I had a very bizarre experience in the supermarket the other week when I was casually walking down an isle and came face to face with a display of hand painted Christmas ornaments and other Christmas paraphernalia. My brain had a spasm as I thought to myself “but we haven’t had Easter yet have we?”. After a couple more attempts at putting my brain in order, which was silently screaming that something wasn’t quite right here, I gave up and continued with my shoppping, forgetting all about it.

It wasn’t until my second visit to the supermarket and I saw the same thing and had the same initial shock, that my brain finally put it all together. I realised that, yes, it’s October, and yes, Christmas is around the corner. In explanation: this will be my third Christmas living in the southern hemisphere in Australia but evidentally I still can’t get my head round it being in the Summer! My brain will not compute!

I don’t know if the fact I am a Pagan doesn’t help, being much more in tune with the seasons and relating them to the corresponding festivals. Afterall, in the northern hemisphere everyone will relate Christmas to Yuletide. The two just go hand in hand. But here in the southern hemishere we would celebrate Yule in July; a different time of year but still in Winter.

To me, celebrating Christmas in Summer is plain weird. The traditional Australian Christmas dinner isn’t roasted turkey with all the trimmings but fish; instead of spending the time huddled up all cosy inside one spends it out at the beach or in the garden topping up the tan; people put up Christmas decorations and lights but to appreciate the full effects one has to wait until after 9 o’clock in the evening for it to go dark.

If that’s not confusing enough there is similar confusion with Halloween. Non-Pagan folk are getting ready to celebrate this next weekend on the 31st October. However, as Halloween originates from one of the old Pagan festivals in the northern hemisphere, also known as Samhain, and these festivals were all tied in with the seasons, not specific dates, in the southern hemisphere Halloween should really be celebrated in Autumn around the 31st 30th [thank you Chris] April.

Unless you’re Alex.
The following five pictures were all uploaded through the button that looks like this Insert Picture Button to the right of the Upload/Insert Text, below where it tells you the permalink when you write posts.
I’ve chosen individual options, and inserted each picture individually.

OK, same pictures, using the previous uploads, but this time using the built-in gallery option in WordPress. The way it looks in this post, BEFORE you click on any of them, does not use any plugins, it is automatically a part of WordPress.
I’ll leave this here for now, as it will be a way to test how different plugins handle images that are part of a gallery, unlike the ones above, and whether they still work or not.
Oh, I told the gallery to use two columns, and link to the image file itself, not an attachment page.

Bellies Full of Arms and Legs

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

It seems to be the time of year at the moment for good news regarding little newcomers on their way. Before I left Plateau one of my colleagues there left to go on maternity leave. I recently also received the good news that another friend of mine, Michelle from my last place of work in the UK, is expecting her second baby in December. A huge CONGRATULATIONS to Michelle and Jim :)

It has started me thinking about the whole “starting a family” thing; a very scary thought as I am approaching thirty with great speed. It’s a catch twenty two as far as I’m concerned; I don’t really want to be having children too late in life (ie. preferably not over the age of thirty five) but at the same time I would like to have settled down, at least found a career path to head down (I’m currently still wandering through life aimlessly not knowing what I want to do) and feel like I am mature enough to cope with the responsibility of bringing new life into the world. Hmm, I should really just be grateful for the fact that I am actually in a committed relationship, therefore making motherhood an option. Mat is certainly keen to be father, I am probably just over thinking things as usual.

Once you do decide to start a family I guess it depends how you go about things as to how many pregnancy tests you might require. For some people, a new life developing may come as a pleasant surprise, where as for others, they may plan everything form day one. Part of the reason I would like children before I am thirty five is so that hopefully it will be easier.

If however, you don’t want to plan on leaving things to fate then this website offers some good deals on kits of pregnancy and ovulation tests. I’d never heard of ovulation tests before but apparently they are used to determine when you are going to ovulate, therefore be most fertile and thus when the best times for “trying” are. This could be especially useful if you want to conceive at a particular time of year, have a spring or autumn baby etc, etc.

The products do not claim to be any better or worse than the leading brands on the market but are certainly very much cheaper meaning you don’t have to spend a fortune on what could otherwise be a pretty expensive operation. I like the idea of being more in control, but then that probably says a lot about me!

Hip Hop Lyrics Deciphered

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

I owe my appreciation of hip hop and rap to my bro who introduced me to the genre about ten years ago now. I used to spend long hours just chilling round at his yard and consequently, as he is big into his hip hop, got to listen to a lot of it.

Rap Artists is a website which lists hip hop and rap artists’ song lyrics. As well as this, each artist that is listed also has a biography and other information of interest, eg. discography listing. The site is quite comprehensive and has a lot of useful information aside from the lyrics including a forum. The one disadvantage that I can see is that so far it only lists what I would class as popular artists or American artists. I did a search for a few of my UK faves, Taskforce and Phi-Life Cypher, and these were not on here, neither was The Herd or Pegz (Aussie hip hop artists that I have discovered since living over here). However, new artists are being added all the time so maybe they will feature in the future.

Proposed Visit Home is Canned

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

Mat and I were planning to fly back home to the UK towards the end of July and spend a few weeks catching up with friends and family. We got all excited and went into the Flight Centre a couple of weeks ago, only to find out that one return ticket to London was going to cost at least Au$2500. This was way more than we were expecting considering I got a return ticket from London to Sydney for a mere 700 GBP.

We were told that as well as being high season, the main reason for the inflated price was the fact that due to the Beijing Olympics starting in August, every man and their dog was heading out that way. This means that all flights passing through Asia have sky rocketed in price. Not good news for us, especially as it would have been a great opportunity to start making some wedding plans for the following August and not to mention the fact that we were really looking forward to seeing everyone again.

Hey ho, on the bright side we won’t have to scrimp and save every last spare dollar for the next few months and it might encourage others to come out here and visit us instead. Mat’s dad and his partner are already planning on a holiday to coincide with next years’ Mardi Gras. I think they are planning on spending a week with us in the Sydney area, a week up the Central Coast and then a week with Mat’s sister Libby in Brisbane/The Gold Coast.

I’m not sure what the living arrangements are going to be for visitors staying with us yet. We only have a one-bedroomed flat with an on-suite bathroom so this could make things a little awkward. There is a self-contained flat beneath ours belonging to the owners of the adjoining house that we are hoping they may allow us to use for such an occasion. However, if this is not agreeable then we will need to source some cheap accommodation nearby.

There are various websites I have looked at which have some reasonably priced flats etc. However, for hotels in Sydney or other cities it is probably best to look at www.hotelscombined.com. Compared to other sites like Expedia etc, they seem to best on prices. If Mat’s dad is going to celebrate Mardi Gras in style then he will probably want to spend at least one night in Sydney.

I am hoping that my dad will come out to visit us sometime, although he says it probably won’t be until the end of next year as he has already planned this year’s holiday. I’m not holding out much hope for my mum visiting as for various reasons she really doesn’t seem keen on the idea. It’s strange but Tom and Chris, our pommie student friends, are out here for less than a year as part of their college course and both their parents have visited, some of their friends and Chris’ sister came out on her own to visit also, not that I’m complaining :-P The most important person for me is my brother; if he comes to visit, which he said he was thinking about yesterday when we were chatting on the phone, I will be more than happy – so here’s hoping :)

For Beer Lovers

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

Now it’s not just a rumour that Aussies love their beer; after living here in Australia for over six months now I would say that most of the Aussies I have met most definitely appreciate an alcoholic beverage of the beer variety.

As Australia is so multi-cultural there are probably a lot of people here with friends or family back in America. As most of my friends and family are back in the UK I know how hard it can be to organise birthday presents and the like to be sent back. So what better way to show someone who lives in America you care about them than to give them a membership to the beer of the month club?

Beer of the month club ships all over the US. For only $31.95 per month they will deliver a 12 pack containing four different types of freshly brewed, fine, hand-crafted beer to your door from different American microbreweries all over the US. Not only do you get to give a great gift, you will also be supporting small specialist local breweries.

If your special someone is not into beer, instead of the monthly beer club you could opt for the wine or cigar of the month club amongst other options. With no minimum membership period this gift can suit any budget. In fact, it sounds so good I will have to see if there is something similar based in the UK :-)
