Adobe Illustrator Rocks

Friday, November 6th, 2009

I’m addicted to computer courses at the moment. It’s the first time I’ve done courses for my own real interest and so far I’ve done a short course on Adobe Photoshop, Aboriginal art (not computer related), HTML for beginners, Adobe Dreamweaver and I started Adobe Illustrator on Monday.

It all started when Manly Warringah Community College put a prospectus in the local paper and I thought it would be nice to do something for fun. I started with Photoshop for photographers because I’m interested in photography and wanted to learn how to improve and edit the pictures I take. I’ve gone on from there and decided to learn a bit more about web design, originally to improve my blog but I like the idea of being able to build basic websites and my goal is to design Mat’s dad one for his mobile sawmill business.

This led me to my current course as he had a logo designed for embroidering onto his work shirts but it isn’t in a format I can use for the website or for letterhead etc. After messing about in Photoshop trying to improve it I gave up and decided Illustrator would be the tool for the job and would be a useful skill to have for future logo design. Illustrator uses vector graphics instead of pixels so is a format preferred by printers and advertisers etc. because the image can be increased in size without compromising the quality.

As with all my previous courses I enjoyed the first lesson immensely and am really looking forward to learning more. It was especially fun because it requires artistic flare and this is a side of me that I am really trying to concentrate on at present. Our teacher has her own graphic design partnership, The National Grid, which is just round the corner from my new work so I must pop in some time as they have a contemporary art gallery there as well which sounds really inspiring.

I spent the whole evening buzzing with creative energy and hope I can unlock some of the potential that I know is buried inside myself somewhere. It’s clamouring to get out and gets all excited at the smell of freedom but then along come the inhibitions that close the door again. I am determined that with my new home and new job comes a new start, starting with letting the artistic flare come out and play!

Anyway, very basic I know but here is the little green monster that I achieved in drawing in the first lesson:

New Header Image

Monday, September 28th, 2009

I’ve finally got around to changing my header image to a suitable photo that I took myself.

Old original header

New Avebury Beeches header

New Avebury Beeches header

I took the photo for the new header back in May this year whilst we were on our holiday home in the UK. I spent a lovely day at Avebury stone circle with two of my close friends and came across this stand of beech trees on a hill just outside the main circle on the way to West Kennet Avenue. The foremost tree looks as though it is a wishing tree from the brightly coloured ribbons that have been tied to various branches.

I may have a further play with the format of this image as I think it could perhaps do with being a little thinner. I suspect it will impede on the first post even more now for anyone that is still using IE7. For now though it will suffice and I’m happier with the more personal feel it adds to my blog.

Why does this blog look different?

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Recently I have Chris has moved this website away from my old free hosting over to his own paid for hosting because he was keen for it to look more professional (i.e. lose the big advertising banner across the top of the page) and for my RSS feed to work (which for some reason didn’t with the free hosting). The nice little plugin that had the thumbnails pop up in their own window had stopped working and it seems it may have something to do with the dodgy bodged-together theme I have been using.

Chris (my personal blog fairy) has been experimenting with new themes, hence the new look. It is by no means a permanent thing as it still looks bodgy and needs a lot of work doing to it, but the picture viewer now seems to be working.

Please bear with it for a while until I find the time and acquire the expertise to find and customise a theme I feel happy with. It may be that I swap to a simple and plain one for a time, just so that I know everything will work and it will all sit properly on the page without any dodgy misalignments etc etc.

In the mean time, a big thank you to Chris for all his hard work in the wee small hours, especially as he now has the added responsibility of helping Irina look after their five month old baby, Anna, now :-)

More Faults When Using Internet Explorer

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

I have just been having a play with my website, attempting to create a favicon.ico (i.e. a customised icon that will appear next to my url in the browser’s address bar). After testing it in my usual browser, Firefox, and finding it not working I had a look with Internet Explorer to see if this recognised my icon.

The result was “hooray” IE did recognise it but disaster – my latest post embedding a youtube video of my goanna stalking has a big blank patch where the video should be.

Oh crikey, I really don’t know what I am going to do about this. When it comes to techie stuff I am a complete blagger, I am playing around with things I really don’t understand here and know nothing about programming. It probably doesn’t help that my theme for my blog was bodged in the first place. Maybe I just need to start afresh with a new theme that is nice and clean and enlist the help of my very dear friend the blog fairy (aka Chris M), when he is back from his birthday trip to Amsterdam of course… in fact make that a good while after his return from Amsterdam to ensure full recovery :)

Anyway, short term answer to the video problem is – I will post a link to my video on youtube in addition to the embedding for those that insist on using IE. For those of you open to change, for a better brighter future, download Firefox here and use instead!

Tough Dog Tuff Truck Challenge Weekend

Friday, April 11th, 2008

We are off camping again this weekend. This time we are off up the central coast to the Hunter Valley to go and spectate at the 2008 Tough Dog Tuff Truck Challenge! You can read more about it here.

It’s basically a weekend packed with events involving some of the most experienced 4×4 drivers in the country driving over the craziest terrains. I’m really excited. Hopefully it won’t take too long to get there but we won’t be leaving until at least 5pm tonight so traffic will probably be pretty nasty. Tom is also coming with us and as his Scooby Doo wagon broke down last week he will be squeezing into the ute with Mat and myself.

Collaroy to Milbrodale

Here is a map showing our route which should (traffic dependant) take appoximately 2.5 hours. I have been wanting to include maps on my posts for a while now and have just discovered this handy piece of software, MW Snap, which allows you to capture images from your screen. It is free to download here but donations are gladly accepted.

Anyway, time to start work. I will give you the full low down on our weekend next week (along with more posts on our Easter weekend in the Blue Mountains which I haven’t forgotten about).

Blog Fairy Has Visited

Monday, December 10th, 2007

Alex doesn’t have internet access for a while, so I just thought I would take this opportunity to introduce myself… I’m the little guy that lives in her server, and occasionally bodges code or script until things work as they are supposed to.

Her friend (Chris) pointed out to me that the Next/Previous page links, when viewnig the main blog index pages, and the Next/Previous post links when viewing individual posts were both missing :(

Although not perhaps as the theme’s author originally intended, both types of links are now present. All I need to think about some time is rediscovering the FTP details so I can magically upgrade her blog to Wordpress 2.3.1 and also install a patch for a plugin of hers.

Anyway enough of me, just remember close your eyes, clap your hands, and say you believe in fairies, else I will will cop it, and then who will fix the blog?

Pigeon PP Spyware Problem

Sunday, July 15th, 2007

Since I have got back from holiday I have been getting a pop up from my Virgin Media PCguard saying it has found Pigeon PP spyware on my PC but is unable to delete it. I’m not quite sure how it got there as I didn’t see it before I went away. My dad was using my pc while I was away to update his PC and contatc job agencies but being the extra cautious person that he is I very much doubt he would have done anything untoward.

So yesterday i decided it was about time I had a look into it and after typing Pigeon PP into google I came across cableforum.co.uk that showed a lot of other people with the same problem. There were lots of suggestions on how to try and get rid of it. I opted for downloading a free version of Ad-Aware 2007 and then running the scan in safe mode, even though one person had said he’d tried this with no success.

On first scan it picked up three different things, one being Win32.Backdoor.Hupigon which I can only presume was what I was looking for. It had three files and four registry entries whereas the other two just had one registry entry each. I deleted all the offending items and proceeded to do another scan to see if it had removed them all.

The second scan showed that there was one Hupigon thing left so I deleted it again and did another scan, the results of which showed nothing to be found. I’d like to think that I have got rid of the thing, the pop ups from Virgin Media PCguard have certainly stopped appearing, but having read the forum again I have discovered a lot more posts that make me have doubts.

One guy posted “This is not spyware as reported by pcguard ntlguard etc it IS a backdoor trojan so spyware wont remove it”. Another person has said it could be linking itself to “system restore” so that it is impossible to remove and to get rid of it you need to disable system restore. Then boot your PC in safe mode and run your antivirus and antispyware so that without the protection of system restore the virus can be identified and deleted.
Another person said they’d tried running Ad-Aware SE and SpyBot Search & Destroy both in safe mode and it hadn’t been able to get rid of it.

Well, I don’t know about all that. All I know is that for now my PC seems ok. I’m just a bit worried it’s still virused but now just looks healthy. Time will tell I suppose, I will just have to keep a beady eye on my bank and credit card statements!

Apologies to Internet Explorer users

Wednesday, July 4th, 2007

I have now got my blog up and running and installed essential plugins etc.
As I have been testing it along the way I have been using Firefox and it works fine as far as I can see… however, having just opened it in Internet Explorer I have discovered a few hitches with visuals. There is a minor defect on the homepage but it then goes a little squiffy if you click on a particular post.

Apologies for this. My limited (next to nil to be more precise) knowledge has me mystified at the moment but I am hoping to enlist the help of someone more experienced in the near future to rectify these problems. No doubt it has something to do with the way me and Chris bodged the original template during the customisation process.

My first very own website… Yay!

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

Wow, well here I am in Kazakhstan with Chris and Irina and I’m writing my very first post on my new blog on my very own domain.

It’s 4.30 in the morning here. We spent an enjoyable evening at a restaurant with Chris and Irina’s friend Oleg who has just come back from Moscow after finishing University there. We then came back to the flat and spent the next 4.5 hours playing monopoly (I just watched for the majority of it as I went bankrupt in the first hour or so) and after Oleg departed we watched an episode of Scrubs before realising the sun had begun to rise and it really was time we should be going to bed.

However, I decided I would just stay up a little while longer to post my first blog as it took me and Chris practically all day to set it up (I decided I wanted a customised template and it took us quite a few bodges before we got it to my liking).

So here it is… welcome to DryadMusings.com.

There will be more to follow but right now I really have to go to bed :-)
